many people who worked in factories or farmed by hand lost their jobs. what new fields of jobs opened up?
how can this relate to outsourcing? what kinds of new jobs would have increased demand in the US? what new jobs fields would form?
How did jobs change during the industrial revolution?
agrarian jobs lessened while more people migrated to the cities and worked in the manufacturing industry, and with textiles. it changed the job market from independent production to mass production.
Reply:During the industrial revolution people STARTED working in factories...they didn't start losing their JOBS in factories. The main change that took place was from the...
DOMESTIC SYSTEM: Artisans and craftspeople made goods in their homes (i.e., wove cloth).
FACTORY SYSTEM: People left their homes and traveled to work, which was in a factory.
All sorts of factory jobs opened up, especially as technology increased: mechanics, engineers, etc. Later, as cities grew larger, public infrastructure jobs opened (such as police, firefighters, teachers, etc.).
This relates to outsourcing because industrialization runs in a cycle: pre-industrial, industrial, post-industrial. As a country becomes wealthier, it begins to lose factory jobs to countries that can do the work more cheaply (because of lower wages). Look at how little is "made" in the USA today, and how much is made in China. The optimistic approach to the problem of losing factory jobs is that new jobs will open up in service sectors (i.e., banking, communications, etc.) and high tech (i.e., software development).
