Are there really jobs that americans aren't willing to do?

President bush has repeatedly called for a "guest worker program" which will allow non-citizens to cross the border to do "Jobs that Americans are not willing to do."





Is there such a thing? I thought the president was a believer in supply and demand? If nobody is willing to do a job for a certain price, then the wages go up until the demand is met. Isn't that how it's supposed to work? Americans wouldn't "want" to be doctors and lawyers if it only paid 16 dollars an hour. That's why their wages have risen to meet demand.





Certainly he can't mean that Microsoft can create a 10 dollar an hour 70 hour a week computer programmer job and then say "americans won't do it" and hire illegal immagrants, does it?





I would like to know what bush and the republicans mean by "Jobs that americans are not willing to do." How is that possible in a free-market economy?

there are jobs that dont make it worthwhile for some americans to take. People on welfare make more in welfare than they would it they work, the system here needs to be changed. Unions make it hard to hire employees who might do these jobs; prisoners, kids, etc. companies that have to pay health care, insurance, etc for legal workers. I think what bush means is that its bad for the companies profits not to be able to hire illegals, pay them low wages, give them no benefits, and tell them to get lost when the work is done.

Gosh, we're American's we'll do anything for money ... it's our accepted universal religion after all %26lt;you won't see a ban on money in schools anytime soon%26gt;. However, bringing in a large supply of low cost illegal immigrants has many benefits for all. First this increases business %26lt;small %26amp; large%26gt; to increase their profits by using cheep labor ... Second, when business's can produce at lower costs then the consumer %26lt;us people who buy stuff%26gt; don't have to pay as much ... when we consumers don't have to spend as much then we theoretically get to save %26lt;reality, charge less debt%26gt; ... this allows the economy to operate with little or no inflation.





Let's hypothetically close the borders and remove all illegal aliens ... then the labor market would experience a shortage of low wage workers ... businesses operating in the USA would have to pay more to the workers and pass the cost of the increase in pay to the consumers ... the consumers would be paying more and have less to spend ... and then the consumers would want more pay to adjust for the additional costs ... we'd see inflation ...
Reply:I'm a Chicana born from a immigrant father and my mother came here on a air plain and not one time did my parents depend on the system to give them any kid of government assistance but worked there azzes off to provide for my brothers and sister and now we have to work to make our living.This is to the person that said something about poverty have you heard the say you maid your bed now lay in it well poverty is not a race,but the way some people like to live.Those that come here to work and give there kids a better life should not be bothered,but look at the ones that are here and depend on the system and have a different generation relying on it.I know some people that are illegal and pay taxes and because they don't have any social security they can't claim taxes so now who is screwing who over?

Reply:Wow susieQ,Im an american and I build homes.I believe the president doesnt know what hes talking about!The only reason americans dont want to pick vegetables is theyre paying next to nothing for wages .If you told my son hed get twenty dollars an hour hed shovel $hit all day.In my opinion the reality of it is we have a hard time putting food on the table at a sub premium wage.Im a bricklayer for 20 years and last year has been a struggle to find work.Ther are many minorities doin the work for half the price with no pension or benefits.Many of them in Chicago are Polish, Irish and Hispanic.They are driving unions out a little at atime.I would like to see Mr. President take on a job with $hit pay and try raising a family.What if all the so called bad jobs were taken by minorities at a lower wage what could our children do to learn responsibilities of having a job when they are old enough to get one.There wont be positions available at even min. wage because thats great for many immigrants.
Reply:When you said jobs that Americans aren't willing to do, you have to consider the pay factor. As you know, there are regulations on minimum pay per hour (different from state to state). But for illegal immigrants, these regulations do not apply. Therefore, businesses tend to hire illegal immigrants and pay them below the minimum wage.
Reply:No, there are not jobs that Americans will not do. I have heard those in office say that we would not eat if it were not for illegals working in the farm or in restaurants. That is not true, they are simply the cheapest form of labor. I believe that there will always be people willing to do that work and if they want it they should come here legally. Illegal aliens burden the economy with their poverty and reliance on medical systems and food handouts. Let them come here legally and work.
Reply:Yes, most americans won't pick vegetales from soil, or build homes, or clean the streets, and many more disgusting jobs.
Reply:No...I think people will do any job that will take care of their families,keep a roof over their heads, food on the table,etc!
Reply:Most people would work any legal job for their families. I'm sure if you offered this job to the homeless, they would do it. but most of them don't have a chance, or figure, since the job is now DEISIGNED for ILLEGALS, the pay in next to nothing and the benefits are terrible.





Really this is just to make sure buisnesses don't have to spend more money paying AMERICAN workers, because we have higher standards (hence, why my mother's job at SBC is being deported to India) as we should have. People come here looking for a better life, so we SHOUld have higher standards.





This is also creating a domino effect, because now jobs are lowering the cost of their products (at least some, most are doing the opposite) and people now can't pay for it because their job has to pay less to keep up with competition.





I am sorry this is not very economic, but this is my observation (seeing as how it's effecting MY family)
