I recently came across a poster who feels that certain genders should not be employed in certain fields (I will not name names). I was surprised to find that there are people that still feel particular jobs should only be employed by one gender or the other. I personally am of the belief that there is no job a male or female should not be allowed to do IF they are fully capable. But I'm curious as to what others think.
So are there any jobs out there that should be female or male only (one gender is "better suited" for the job)? If so, what jobs are they and WHY do you think only males should work in them or only females?
Are there jobs that should be male only or female only?
I don't think there are any jobs that should lean toward one gender over the other. I used to teach preschool and got major s0hit from a few parents. I started out as an aide, then got enough units and a certificate to be a head teacher. One mother went as far as pulling her kid out of the program because I am a male and I was working with 3/4 year olds. It's stupid people like that, that keep the sterotypes and biases alive. I'm just as good at teaching preschool as is the older 60 year old lady who went to school 40 years ago (i'm 26). But no, all jobs can be worked by either a male or female.
I think Jenny needs to go watch North Country with Charlize Theron
Reply:Gosh, look at how many answers suggest that men are specifically needed in the scheme of human survival as beasts of burden! Weird. The only job women can do that men cannot is give birth. So, glorious superior beasts of burden and sacred vessels of breed stock aside, there are no jobs that humans cannot figure out some way to do without regard for genitalia. That fact annoys people, though, who cannot conceive of a society that is not divided and designed along genital lines.
Reply:Restroom attendant should be gender specific
Reply:Jenny. The title of brick carrier is; " hod carrier. "
You know my position on combat arms of the military.
Reply:Let's see a woman become a garage collector or a portapotty sewerage collector. Those are very disgusting jobs especially when it gets very hot. If you can tell me just one please proof it to me.
Reply:No anyone who is capable of doing a job should be allowed to do it. I supposed that there might be some jobs (I can't think of any, but there must be some) that a certain gender might tend to be better at, but if a member of the opposite gender can do it I can see no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to.
Reply:There are quite a few jobs that I prefer not to do, so I'm very grateful that men are capable and willing to do them.
One is chokesetting... working in the logging industry falling and gathering trees. While women may be able to do it, I think men are more built for the work.
Carrying brick to bricklaying sites (I'm don't know the job title) would be a very long job for me, where men have the strength to do that, at least until the third hernia sets in.
Heavy work can be done by women, but not with the efficiency that men can do it.
Reply:hala L - I'm quite surprised, quite a sexist attitude. Whether, a man wants to teach young kids is quite different that if he can.
And I'm all for an all women army, it's about time.
Reply:Jobs should be open for everyone to apply for, but standards should never be lowered to allow anyone in. I haven't really thought about it, but I'm sure there are jobs that are better performed by one gender more than the other due to our biological differences. For instance, a job that requires weight lifting would probably be more fit for a man. Not sure if it would be physically healthy for a woman to want to compete in the same field and challenge her body to perform the same as a man.
Reply:If you can fully handle the job it doesn't matter what is between your legs.
But on that note, a female cop was killed here this week when a make suspect over powered her and then took and used her own gun to kill her.
Reply:I think any woman should be able to do any job she is capable of. But I think there are some jobs that very few women are likely to be capable of doing, jobs that require exceptional physical strength for instance. And fi i was trapped in a house on fire for instance, I'd want a big strapping fireman to be the one rescuing me, not some little girly.
Reply:workplaces should not discriminate on sex. i think men can make great teachers, anyone who has a problem with that probably has some unsolved issues. there are women who are strong enough to perform manual labor efficiently. one must try to not overgeneralize.
Reply:I've seen excellent female roofers, mechanics, firefighters, surgeons, dentists, etc. and so on. I've also seen excellent male nurses, kindergarten teachers, manicurists, secretaries, etc. and so on. So I'm not convinced that there are any.
Hey, wait, SP--what if the military was solely made up of women? Surely that would fix it! And as they say on the discovery channel, females are the fiercest defenders of hearth and home.
Reply:bathroom at.......
Reply:I got one - female impersonator.... men only.
;-)
Reply:I'm still for barring women from active combat roles in the military. It causes serious tactical, and behavioral problems, male soldiers start acting erratically, etc. The only time I would support the idea of women in combat roles is if there's an invasion, otherwise, it's preferable to keep women in support roles. Capability is not the issue, it's the effect their presence has on the male soldiers (who will in all likeliness always be the majority), it may be unfair, but that's how war is.
I'm not saying women can't fight (quite the contrary, see some of those famous female Russian snipers). The reason I support keeping women out of combat roles is not due to their own performance, so much as the affect their presence has on other (male) combatants. They've done extensive studies on that, hence why virtually every country bars them from such roles, with the exception of the Israeli Defense Force, though even they have regulations to try and keep females out of most direct combat situations.
Reply:Absolutely not. For every woman who can perform a traditionally male task, there's a man who can perform a traditionally female task, and both of them should be allowed to do them.
Reply:Personally I can't picture females as lobsters catchers; nor can I picture them at the front lines; add that to working on the oil fields with all the heavy equipment.
Reply:Each gender has unique talents and those should be utilized. To the guy who is a preschool teacher, I would have a problem with you too, men are not the type of nurturers that women are and most do not have the patience for young children, also very few men even find work with children enjoyable.
Women don't have the physical strength to take on most male dominated jobs and in some cases the job i.e jobs that require spatial skills come more naturally for males.
It's not a bad thing we're just different.
