DoD jobs... anyone get a response?

My husband has all of his firefighting certs from Louis F. Galand/Goodfellow Fire Academy and was a squared away sailor when he was in the military-AWESOME at his job. He has been applying to all the USA Jobs and DONHR openings for Firefighter. We are not picky about where we go since we are accustom to that lifestyle. Has anyone here gotten a job from any of those sites when you utilized their resume builder? OR what way did you apply to get the job?

We just feel like he is wasting the education that he got from the military. He REALLY wants one of these jobs. Give me pointers if you have any. Thanks!!!!

It is about waiting it out, but the biggest part of the process is who you know. If you have ever been to a military based where the have lots of DOD employees they move back and forth between DOD jobs no problem. This is because they know the people hiring and making the all the decisions. You need to GO TO the base you want to work at and have your husband talk to the people that work at the Fire Station. Then he needs to tell them he wants a job. Just like in the civilian world he would be going on an informational interview but along with doing that he is putting a face to the name in the system. I honestly do not know anybody that got a DOD job without having a buddy on the inside that helped them get the job. Is it right no, but the military is a giant buddy sysytem too. He just needs to get a buddy. It sucks, but it is a reality and he is qualified so he shouldn't have a problem getting one of the jobs he wants after he makes some kind of contact with the inside people.
Reply:Biggest tip is be patient and persistent. I live in DC and it's tough. Many people wait a year to hear back. Check with the OPM for info about veteran's preferance
Reply:I used to work for the gov't. I didn't apply through the OPM website (this was pre-internet), but I can tell you that it took a year before I heard anything about my application. By that time, I had just assumed that I'd never hear anything!

Keep applying and I wish you both the best of luck. I hope you hear something soon.
